OUR WORLD - Cemetery at a Sydney Suburb

On my last day in Sydney, my son dropped me of here
so I could take the cliff walk to Bronte beach
while he and grandson went for their daily swim
in the sea.

8 kilometres from the CBD of this multi-million city
is this historic old cemetery in the
suburb of Clovelly

it is extensive in size, covering two hillsides

mausoleums and an occasional palm tree
vary the never ending gravestones

the whole is situated on prime real estate with extensive views
for the dead to enjoy

a pleasant and restful place for a protracted walk
with the occasional angel
to keep one company

  1. Hi Arija, I'm back in Tz and will be visiting blogs again. I love cemeteries and although SA has restful and peaceful ones too, it's becoming too dangerous to visit them now. Great to see you were visiting with your family. Blessings Jo

    1. It was great doing it to Bronte Beach before I had to board the train to Adelaide again. Nice to stretch on's legs.

  6. Thanks for your visit and comment. The books of the Gnomes are also my favourites. If we should live in such a world, we would all be happy and peaceful.

  8. Harbour views for the first and last time for many of the residents I suspect.
And I have a weakness for cemeteries myself. The older the better.

  9. I have never seen a cemetery as large as this.

  10. A wonderful resting spot for the loved ones..What a pretty view and I love the angel.. It reminds me of a cemetery in Puerto Rico called the Santa Maria Magdalena, which also has a beautiful view of the water. Great shots, Arija!

  14. I can see why it might have been called Clovelly. The original place of this name is in Cornwall and is built on a steep hillside leading down to the sea. It's also very beautiful but a mite crowded.

    1. That certainly fits the bill John. It is on a sheer and rugged coast. Once I have learned howe to upload videos, you'll be able to see and hear it.

  15. Some beautiful headstones, along with a great view. It doesn't look as if there would be any space left.

    1. I thought so too but saw a new grave there. Maybe it was a family plot dating back a couple of centuries.

  16. What a peaceful site Arija ... complete with sea-views. Looks like Sydney put on it's best-face especially for you.

  17. What great photographs. You've captured the tranquility of this huge graveyard. I don't think I've ever seen such a large one. It looks quite surreal to see angels and palm trees side by side. Over here we tend to have rather gloomy yew trees. All the best, Bonny

  23. Wow! That's quite the cemetery. I've always found it funny the way they sell cemetery plots with views. As if the dead will actually enjoy them but I guess it helps those who are left behind to have their loved ones in a beautiful space. x

  24. Beautiful ... I think the views are for those who visit ... those who need the sense of life ongoing (from the city view) and the peace of the sky above ....

I'm impressed that your son and GS are able to swim daily in the ocean. Wow.
