TODAY'S FLOWERS ~ Summer Roses

Roses burning in the summer heat. A dry 42C is not a comfortable
temperature for either bush or bloom. It dessicates the petals in a
matter of hours.

In our mountain garden the temperature is 7C cooler due to the
adiobatic lapse rate. The roses last a little longer there.

This is Rosa Noisettiana, one of the oldest roses in our garden, it was
planted in the 1870's when the gable end was added to the house.

A delightful survivor of another era with delightful scent and
extraordianry hardiness. It blooms but once a year and bristles
with sharp thorns yet it is one of my greatest treasures.
I have only ever seen one other specimen in Australia.

The logo is a magic carpet to many more flowers around the world.

  2. I love very old roses; their scent is pure heaven and the many petals and blooms makes them worth all the wicked thorns they frequently have.
I am down to three antiques, names unknown, but I do love them when they bloom....

    XXOO!!

  3. Such beautiful roses, and such intense heat. I think we each could use a moment in the other's climate to be refreshed. I'm afraid winter and its bitter cold, winds and snow will be here for much more than 6 weeks. But one can always hope. And I wish you cool moments in your relentless heat.

  4. The summer heat sure is intense where you are. The temp. took me by surprise. Here we are nothing but cold--all over the continent, it seems. Your photos are graceful and beautiful though the flowers are suffering.

  17. OH, 42 is very hot, I would wilt too. It shows how hardy roses are to survive hot and cold. It is lovely to have the roses for such a long time, like in Europe where they seem to be in the gardens for ever. My roses get scorched too when the sun is out. I like the overcast days so it is still hot but humid.
Thank you for your comment, Arija, I appreciate it. I hope you get some rain.

  22. Oh Arija, how gorgeous those roses are! That temperature of 42 C would kill me. I remember that I was always ill, when the weather was too hot and so humid. This is one of the reasons that I don't like to go to Australia in your summer. I always go in our summer.

  23. Yes, it's a pity to see them wilt due to the burning sun. Hope you will recover from too much summertime heat over there. We get that now and then at intervals between hot and cold; temperate and mild.

  24. Such amazing beauty! These are treasures indeed. We were just talking today how it would be so nice to have something blooming right now, as our landscape is pretty bland looking. I can enjoy blooms through your photos!

  30. Very lovely roses - and so weird to look at for a blogger who has a lot of snow outside - and almost minus 20 degrees Celcius!
But I keep warm with warm clothes, both for me and my little dog! :)

    Have a nice week Arija!
