Watery Wednesday ~ Our Grebes are Back

After the dam was a dry dustbowl the summer before last
and only a puddle last year, at the start of this summer it was
almost a third full. We had nearly despaired of seeing our
resident pair of Australasian Grebes, Tachybaptus novaehollandiae.
Spring came this year but no Grebes but, miracle of miracles, they
are back and have one little grebelet to boot!

These shots are from before the big dry and taken across the
dam as the Grebes are very shy but aren't their flyffy backsides
cute?
All my photos enlarge should you like a closer look.

  3. I love coming upon ducks.
    I'm glad yours have returned.
We get a pair on the top of our pool cover every spring, and hurry to remove it before they get too cozy and set up family time. They head down to the lake, I suppose , and then return in the spring to visit again.

  12. Are you crazy of course you are coming and you are gypsy 19.

My plan was to travel to Australia and to bring some cool mountain ice and we would take turns keeping the head wagon (yours) cool. Even I would get up off my butt to make sure you were cozy.

Oh hunter gatherer get well and we will be there by the morning.

  13. Hello mad crone I love the idea. Notice you never ever said mad but I did. And your seven skirts with all the pockets.

  14. Oh I love the skirts. And 7 well gypsies are obviously brilliant, I never even thought of one for each day.

    Arija I love you.

Saw my Mom last night and she is such a wonderful doll. But it is hard too because you can see that she gets worse.

I wanted to throw a gypsy throw on her and see if it was more magical than the Scottish tartan she was wearing but I knew that was not so.

  16. If Monet had had Grebes in his pond, his painting would have looked like your photo!

I am so glad your Grebes are back, with a little one to boot!
