TODAY'S FLOWERS, & I Heart Macro - Masses of Roses

Today is reserved for the queen of all flowers, the Rose
here are just a hand full from my garden

be it sun kissed apricot

or soft as a maiden's blush

a massed effect on my table

or a rootstock sucker left to ramble

virginal white

or a lover's delight

or even deep purple like the silent shade of night

they grace our existence, awake our emotions
our hearts expand to their heady scent.

I could give you reams of information but I will leave you with
just one tip: if a rose dies, do not plant another in it's place,
it too will die unless you completely exchange the soil
for more than the root space of the dear departed.

  1. I adore your roses. I don't think I have ever seen the purple stunner before. What is it? It looks like a David Austan, but I am no rose expert.

    1. Thanks. You are quite right, it is called 'The Prince'. It makes a rather weedy bush prone to black spot but the actual rose is even deeper purply red than I was able to achieve in the shot.

  2. You've captured the beauty of these roses superbly. I am rather fond of roses, but do not grow them in my garden as I've had too many encounters with their thorns where I've always come out the loser!

    1. Richard, there are some very nice thornless roses available.

    1. Christiane, I plant all my roses by nose, no scent not for me. I only have four that have no scent, two were gifts and two that were not true to their label. At latest count, I have about 150 on the farm.

    1. Theresa, that white one is JFK, developed in memory of your so tragically assassinated president. It is reasonably tough and as our climates are similar, would do well in your yard as well.

  11. While mine are waning (being upside down from you), yours are doing THIS. I would stick my nose right into that dark purple one ... can almost smell it from here!

    1. Mickie, just come over and stick your nose into anyone you like although that particular one is so flat, it is hard to stick anything into it.

    1. Karen, roses are tough guys. If they can happily grow in the Baltic States in Europe, which extend further north than Ontario, you can certainly grow them where you are.

  18. Your roses are absolutely lovely! We are very limited on the roses that will overwinter here, but I have several in pots that I put into cold storage. Not near as satisfying as having them growing in the ground, but for that we have an abundance of wild roses growing all around our yard.

    1. I would dearly love to see your wild roses Elaine, there are so many different ones around the world and quite honestly I enjoy the primeval ones much more than quite a few of the modern cultivars.

My morning has just been blessed, for the poem, the images of these gorgeous Roses, all just thrilling to see unfold I am certain, as well as the fragrance in the air, must assuredly bring a smile. Lovely, all of them. I never knew about the planting of the Rose, yet will try to remember. Hugs~
