The Bird

A bird I know not
and have never heard before
so near yet far away
with mournful cry
he fills the air
with his sad voice
yet find him I can not.

He haunts my sleep
disturbs my dreams
awakens feelings
of things lost
and just beyond recall
or hoped for and forgot
pulling at heartstrings
with melodies of wordless longing

  1. Your poem makes me wonder what bird you are thinking of. But that is just it, isn't it? It makes the reader think of his own? Me, I think of the Hermit Thrush.

  4. Did you read "To Kill a Mockingbird"? That's another bird with a symbolic meaning. There are birds in Australia which make very strange sounds. Beautiful poem, Arija!!

  5. A beautiful poem yet so sad.

I'm sure his song would sound chirpier if you could see the singer. Lets hope he reveals himself!

  8. That bird visits my place, too. He sits on a craggy branch and sings in the morning hours.

Your words and poetry are exquisite.

  9. Beautiful poem.. I spent months trying to get a glimps of a bird that was singing in the field behind my back garden... It turned out to be a Wood Warbler... I did not expect that at all..

  13. Brillian Photography, Arija. I love the mood the poem evokes - it makes me think of the Grey-headed shrike, also known as the Ghost bird here in South Africa. It's call is haunting, a repetitive and drawn-out whistle: whooooooooooooo. Please let us know if you spot your elusive bird. (((Hugs))) Jo
