World Bird Wednesday - Yellow-Rumped Thornbill

Seldom do I ge the chance to capture this little bird, the
Yellow-Rumped Thornbill, Acanthiza chrysorrhoa, in a tree.
They are chattery ground feeding birds usually seen in small
flocks in gay abundance in my garden.

This one I captured in the park not 15' away from me and I
had my 300mm lens with me for a change. Unfortunately
the light was not in my favour but the Thornbill posed for
me for quite a while.

Luckily most salient features are visible. The black and white
markings around the eyes as well as the white dots on the head.
The head pattern makes it so identifiable since it is the only
Thornbill sporting polka-dots.

All photos enlarge for closer inspection.

  5. I find all birds hard to photograph, especially ground feeders. These turned out great with the blue sky background. The black and white eye stripe reminds me of our White-crowned sparrow.

  8. Lovely photos! It makes a huge difference when you have sunshine and blue skies. A gray sky just seems to wash everything out.

  15. This is a cute little fellow, and I really love the dots on the head. Don't you just love it when these birds cooperate. Love the blue sky too. We are even getting some too but it's still way too cold.

  16. I like your bird pictures. Good you captured them clearly and with nice backdrops.
I wish I could also shoot them up close but my camera zoom is not powerful enough to do it.

  20. The thornbill was a good capture. Particularly with the bright blue sky. I guess I really notice since we have had very little blue sky around here in West Virginia.
