OUR WORLD, Wild Bird Wednesday & Nature Notes - Just Peacocking About . . .

This visitor to my garden may be jung and inexperienced
but as I went to call the chickens, he promptly displayed
for me.

His feathers are not yet fully grown but you have to give
him 10 points for trying.

Shivering his feathers and turning

to show off the back end which displayed the engineering
works of how he can lift and hold up that huge fan
when it is fully grown.

Actually, I find the back view quite enchanting.

After a curtain call or two he calmly walked off into
the rose garden to help with the weeding.

I look forward to having all three fly up for a visit.

Their flight, for such a big bird, is surprisingly silent.

For all those of you who wondered how we can stand
those loud screeches, it is just like the striking of the
grandfather clock, you sit up in bed as though startled
when it does NOT strike. I had not realised how much
I had missed the peacocks until I heard their familiar
call again. Apart from that, they certainly let you know
when a strange car comes down the road and since the
goose is taking a break from guard duty while she
incubates, it feels good to have a second line of defence.

Have a happy week every one!

  8. What a beautiful bird! He posed nicely for you, arija. I love the blue color and imagine how magnificent he’d be when the feather is full grown as he is already nice enough.

    1. My granddaughter adopted three peacocks from someone who had too many. This young one likes frying up the hill to my garden. They are all free to take advantage of our property, visit the other animals or enjoy the wild wood.

  18. Arija, how absolutely wonderful to have these magnificent birds in your garden. So gorgeous. I once had Guinea hens, and I remember how they also let you know when anyone came close they didn't know. Keep me posted on any goslings you get.
Things here are the same. No change which at this point is good. Take care and have a wonderful rest of the week.

  20. I, for one, would rather have a guard peacock in my yard than a guard dog! How lovely he is.

    1. I am lucky enough to have both, though my dog does not protect me from rapists or axe murderers, just other dogs.

  22. They do tend to let you know where they are! There were peacocks on the roof of the first holiday house I ever stayed in - in fact it was the first place I spelt in that was not home that did not have a canvas roof! They were very loud, but a good alarm clock for fishing!

  23. I have only seen these magnificent creatures in zoos or nature preserves. This young one should be quite colorful when fully grown to strut his colors.

  25. They are marvelous!
We used to have guinea fowl, and while some people complain of their noise, I thought it was a fun sound to hear out our window.
My niece filled us in today during Thanksgiving gathering, about her newly acquired emu!
