Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes - Little Corellas, hundreds of them . . .

Yesterday, I had occasion to go to Murray Bridge and while
there, took the opportunity to walk by the river,
only to find it very crowded indeed.

There were hundreds, if not thousands of Little Corellas
digging up and nibbling on the new, white node shoots
of the extensive lawns.

Not concerned with passing cars and only lazily flapping a
short distance when children chased them.

Others, who had had their fill, were decorating the abundant
trees in the vicinity.

Some had slipped into the land of nod

while others were in a semi-comatose, meditative state

unconcerned with the preening tactics of their neighbours.

This one, with his feathers ruffled by a gentle breeze,
slept with half an eye open

while below, a couple were intent on removing the sheaths
off each others emerging head feathers

and needless to say, here and there, the occasional
squabble enlivened the scene.

  2. Wow! That's a lot of birds. Too bad that they can be so destructive of lawns - plus they are sooooo noisy!

  3. What a delightful show they put on for you.

  4. Wonderful captures, Arija. I've never seen these birds before. How do they pull up grass with their curved beaks? Obviously they do, but I just wondered. I love the photos of them in the tree. Thanks for sharing. I trust you are keeping well. (((Hugs))) Jo

  5. Jo, with the curved, upper leak, they dig down to the forming leaf bud, then, with the lower beak they nibble the shoot off by rubbing one beak against the other. They have a leathery tongue like the round end of a finger.
I'm doing much better thank you.

  7. We love our corellas, but they are (here anyway) aggressive little birds, punching well above their weight. Even the cockatoos make way for them.

  19. the last photograph stand-off made me smile. Beautiful series. Reminded me of a trip in Victoria (name I can't think of) where the tall trees were dripping with sulphur-crested cockatoos. From a distance I couldn't help but think of big magnolias .... I often hear corellas flying overhead at end of day but rarely see flocks of them like you have shown here; lovely

  20. Wonderful series! I can imagine the lawn is a little the worse for wear once they're done with it.

  21. You have no idea how exotic that scene with all those white birds that aren't doves looks to non-antipodeans........

  22. SO funny .... corollas and their antics. I love the way they preen each other ... not a feather out of place. This mob must have been very hungry.

  24. Very nice pictures - we sometimes get big flocks in Melbourne. I found one about a year ago on the way to work, so I turned around and went home for the camera!

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.
