OUR WORLD - Show Time

Last Saturday it was yet again time for our local Mt.Pleasant
Agricultural Show
one of the major regional shows in the state

camel rides wove their way around the booths
as well as pony rides

side-show alley was a little quiet and looked a little worn
although the children enjoyed the rides

dahlias in the show pavilion were spectacular as were some of
the paintings and farm produce as well as cakes in all categories

my grandson-in-law was a star in sheep shearing, winning the
seniors section as well as coming second in the open against
the top shearers in the state

(grandma-in-law proud as Punch)

and wouldn't you know it?
a lot of bull!

The others were being judged in the background and dwarfed by
this huge beast

though the day was grey and troubled by a cold, gusting wind that
peppered one with flying sand,
a great day was had by all.

    1. Hi Eileen, the equivalent of your state fair is our state show which is in spring . In the autumn we have our regional shows and our's is the biggest of those.

  4. I thought, "How can this be Arija's blog if there are camels - has she gone to the Sahara?" I just love Dahlias and the ones you've shown look like prize-winners. Glad to see you have a Champion in the family!

    1. Barb, I've shown camels in the wild before. Considering we have the only disease free wild camels in huge numbers in our drylands and even the Arabs buy them from us for camel racing, it's not really surprising. The camels were brought in in the early days by Afghan camel drivers for carting good around the hot parts of the country and since the motor car came in, they have been set free in the desert and have become a threat to the sparse native vegetation there.

  5. What a wonderful day out Arija ... there's nothing quite compares with Country Shows and yes! sometimes side-show alleys could do with a smarten up. Well done to your grand-son in law for his wins in the shearing category.

    1. Thanks Dianne, we certainly had a good day. Luckily I could get out of judging so I could watch the shearing.

  9. Classic country show - they are always a good source of things to eat and photograph.

I agree about the building in my post this week - it looks like the long section of the cross is being driven into the Earth - it looks violent to me. I find the symbolism of the whole building unsettling, but given the country of origin of most of my "viewers" I decided not to say all I think!!

  10. There is always lots to see at a show. Congratulations to your grand-son-in-law for the win. Is he a shearer by trade? Have a wonderful week. I am not sure if I got back to you after you visited my blog last week - sorry - I got behind!

  12. Just like our local agricultural show here Arija - ours is held on the last Saturday in August - just up the lane from our farm. Everything looks pretty similar apart from the camels!

  16. This looks great fun. In Oregon this is similar to what we'd call the annual County Fair ... there is animal judging and contests, flowers, veggies and canned goods, baking contests etc etc. We haven't been for several years but used to go every summer and loved it so much. So here in Florida they had a county fair this month and we decided to go and it was nothing but a stupid carnival and sideshow. I felt so cheated.

  18. Great shots. I always enjoy the agricultural show at our State fair. I haven't been in recent years but the crafts and agriculture part with all the animals were the only reason I went to the fair after my daughter got too old to want to go with her parents.
