TODAY'S FLOWERS & I Heart Macro - White Belladonnas

Calling from the back of the garden in the mounting gloom
like moonlight in the middle of the night
the naked ladies stand tall and proud
radiating their light from within

the brightness draws one ever nearer

until you stand before them in wonder of the light they diffuse
and the sheer beauty of the grouping of their blooms
surrounding those precious buds

you bend down to drink in their scent and come face to face with
their golden hearts

What joy to have them in my garden for even a brief period each
autumn.

They are survivors, just like me, through drought and poor soil
they relentlessly bloom in old farm gardens, a hundred years after
the homestead has crumbled and the barren land lies deserted

the Belladonnas push up their buds through the hard-baked soil
as heralds of the first autumn rain that will fall two weeks hence.

I have watched them over fifty years at least and they never disappoint.

  1. What BEAUTIES ... !
I love envisioning "like moonlight in the middle of the night" for who has not woken to that particular kind of moonmagic and felt suddenly that they are not so alone after all? They bloomed near my old digs in California and came up the same, from parched earth.

    1. I do love a heap of white flowers that embellish a moonlit garden. I plant quite a bit of white as 'markers' in the night garden.

  12. Oh Arija the flowers are beautiful. But somehow the post makes me happy and sad all at the same time. It's the mention of the flowers still blooming even though the homestead has crumbled.... we see so many abandoned farms when we travel and it always makes me sad, but last summer we passed one crumbling home that still had a hedge of yellow roses blooming. I burst into tears. So poignant. Beyond sad somehow.

    1. We have a great many abandoned soldier settlement farms, that makes if doubly sad, in land grants that may have been viable one in 10 years but are in reality desert country. Those who survived the great wars, then battled and lost against nature.

    2. Oh that is such an interesting bit of history -- and like so many bits (here too) so sad. I wonder if the lawmakers who started the soldier settlement farms meant well at the time or ....

  13. Oh I love your Naked Ladies, so pure in colour and they just radiate smiles I know. We have them, but they are a dusty pink in colour...I think I should love the pure white ones...something very special in their faces. Love to you my sweet and precious friend~
