TODAY'S FLOWERS are MY WORLD ~ Spring has Sprung

Spring came early this year, these Snowflakes flowered
early in July and are now just a memory . . .

now I have pots and pots of Hyacinths in all the colours of
the rainbow . . .

the Bridal Veil has burst into bloom and is spreading it's
gentle scent.

Viburnum burkwoodii has such a strong perfume that it
is best enjoyed at a short distance.

Prunus blossoms are a boon for the bees as the

Almond trees are shedding their snowy petals on the grass.

This last week I have been speed pruning my 150 roses and
having to do a great deal of tree surgery on them as they
have been totally neglected over last three years. I am stiff
and sore and am not quite half way there but with these late
blooms that I have just pruned off, how can I give up now?

TODAY'S FLOWERS ~ 31 My Garden Today

As I went out to the garden this afternoon, I found
this ballerina in her tutu dancing on my Almond tree.

when she saw me, she blushed rosy red, was she
pleased, was she embarrassed? Who can tell....

Meanwhile, Viburnum burkwoodii was out in all her
glory exuding perfume all around.

Not to be outdone, the first branch of my Orchid had
opened and the whole shadehouse was bathed in scent.

Shy 'Claire Matin' coyly turned her head as I lifted
my camera.

Further down the garden path the Crabapple was
reaching for the sky,

here it is again in all its perfumed delight, Malus
floribunda,
shading the grass that perhaps I should
have weeded out. On the other hand, the grass is
still green and green is good.

TODAY'S FLOWERS ~ 28 From our Neighbour's Garden

Please ENLARGE for best effect.

This is only a part of the lovely bouquet our neighbour
of 38 years of adventures on the ridge of Mt.Lofty in
South Australia, gave me as we left after a short visit. In
1983 we both lost our houses and gardens in one of our most
devastating bushfires. In the early 1970's this was an isolated
bush area with a dozen or so historical houses and a few
modern ones. Now there is a freeway nearby and people lock
their doors and cars and this, the then pristine water
catchment in the highest rainfall area in the sate, is covered
by houses and roads. In the driest State in the driest Continent
it just highlights the idiocy of our State planners.

Our dear neighbour grows superb Camellias and this
bloom is almost 4"across. As it opened, this glorious red
bloom turned out to be Siamese twins with two centres!

Camellias need to be picked in bud to keep well in a vase
but these marvels have now lasted for three days in a heated
room and were fully open when I received them.

Photographed at arms length in the car on the way back to the farm.
