OUR WORLD - Boys will be Boys

On our way back from Melbourne, after stopping at the
Ballarat Botanical gardens,(see post below) we hoped to
spend the night at the picturesque little town of Dunkeld
at the southern side of the Grampians but were sorely
disappointed since the whole place was booked out due
to a wedding.

Here you can just see the shadow of the mountains in the
distance. It was starting to get dark and we were forced to
drive through the mountain range to Halls Gap along a
pitted narrow road. All roads in the area had been badly
damaged by a massive rain event.

The scenery, while the light lasted, was spectacular of the
granite topped mountains.

Happily, in the pitch darkness, we got a room at the Halls Gap
Motel where in the early morning light we were greeted by
mobs of kangaroos grazing right outside our door.

Here, all is still quiet on the western front

but a challenge is offered for pistols for two at dawn.

Battle is firmly engaged,

at first looking almost like an invitation to the dance

a little stand off as the combatants size each other up

and fight in deadly earnest with their own unique style of
kick-boxing.

And another try at ripping his opponent's guts out,

while indulging in some wrestling for good measure.

Another missed kick from the gent on the right,

a little parlay,

Oh, I say old chap, it was only a misunderstanding!

And all's well that ends well and everyone can go back to
munching the grass.

Meanwhile, yours truly felt free to breathe again as I was so
close to them I could easily have become the outsider attacked
by both.

I have been having trouble getting the OUR WORLD Logo so please click
on OUR WORLD to join the meme.

  2. It still seems so amazing to see them up close and personal as you so frequently do! And you were indeed a bit too close for comfort! Take care! Hope your week is off to a good start, Arija!

  6. Spring, glorious spring! I'm assuming they were vying for dominance...or is this everyday behavior?

  8. The scenery was fantastic. Glad the light lasted for the shots and that you found a place to stay. The kangaroos did look like they were dancing.

  9. Wonderful images of the boxers..

I love the mountains in the second pic...Rorkes Drift sprang to mind.
If I was there I would just have to climb to the summits as Mallory said about Everest in 1924"Because it's there"
He came from a village about 5 miles from where I live...must be something in the air lol

  11. This is such a fascinating post, Arija! Kangaroos are always interesting animals, for in our world in Europe there is nothing like these big strange hopping creatures! Thank you for sharing!

  12. Hi there - The Grampains are one of my favourite places - and planning to visit in the next few weeks.

We normally stay in Halls Gap - and just like you watch the 'roos in the morning - in our case on the football oval!

    Splendid post!

  16. This is so fun to see the roos not in a fence, while I could see them only in our zoos.

P.S. The laborers were picking the flowers (ranunculus) and are sold in the store inside the flower fields.

  21. These Kangaroo pictures are priceless ! I have only see them in our zoo ! It must be funny to look out of the window and have such a show !!

I think the shop in Brussels is still there !

  22. Wow, cool photos of the kangaroos. You really were close to the action, you must be brave. I do think they are cute. Love the shot of the mountains, very pretty scene. Thansk for sharing.

  23. Whew … I’m so glad it all ended peacefully! The scuffle looked quite serious and must have been disconcerting to see from up close. Seems as if grazing kangaroos are as common as cattle are in my part of the world. This would be very unusual in BC. :)

  26. Interesting little interaction you caught there. We have to be wary of them on our church property, not wanting to get too close.

  27. Hi - am doing so research about what is actually open in the parks - I've got no interest in visiting a place if I can get out of the car parks!!

  29. Your narration made me crack. The kangaroos are funny in the photos but it must be different in real life.

  30. I misunderstood ! your were standing so close ?? Geez, how thrilling, that was even better but probably not without danger too.

  31. I feel familiar to the scenery in the first photo, it looks like Japanese spring. The second photo looks a bit different, and the kangaroos are totally Australian! It’s fun for me to see them standing on their hind legs. The fighting looks like their expression of the joy of spring. Thank you for sharing. Have happy days ahead, Arija.

  40. I came by her for Shadow Shot Sunday, but got distracted by this post! So, these kangas just come and hang out at the park and put on a boxing match? Well, even if that isn't the truth, it sure looks like it. What amazing images.

  41. hihi, love it. This is the kind of shots I can´t take unless I come visit you. :)

  42. The scenery is fantastic. This post is wonderful and it made me smile while looking at the kangaroos performance.

  43. That's sure a unique sight to behold first thing in the morning... a mob of kangaroos with a couple of males wrestling for alpha status! Whenever something doesn't quite turn out the way it was planned or expected, I just assume a better story will emerge... Maybe that is what you got when your plan to stay in Dunkeld was scuttled.

  44. Loved this sequence, Arija! Your captions brought a smile to my face.

  45. Wow, roos sure look different when they are being aggressive. Thanks for being brave to get these great action photos.
Funny, I was just reading Hels' post about the kangaroo that boxed men in Paris. Now I see the real thing.
