World Bird Wednesday - Long-billed Corella

Very like the Little Corella I showed you a few weeks ago
but a bit larger and more colourful, the Long-billed Corella,
Cacatua tenuirostris, is a seed eater and, as you can see, digs
up lawns with it's long, sharp bill. People with lawns tend to
complain when a whole flock of them attack their precious
greensward.

I however, am rather partial to these cheeky birds. They tend
to look at one as though they were planning to play some
trick on you.

These were on the lawn where I photographed the kangaroos
in the post below.

I love the blue around the eye as well as the bright red trim
of their breeding plumage, their cheeky strut and occasional hop.

In large numbers in grain growing country they can become
very destructive to the crop but here in a National Park I
welcome the sight of them.

the Logo at right and get to see a lot of birds you have never seen
before or have no access to on your home turf.

  6. How amazing to have these birds in the neighborhood digging up the yard. I would have a little respect for that beak though, maybe ask before taking their picture! Great takes Arija and thank you as always for your kind comments!

  12. Hi there - what a great bird they are. Although lots of them in one palce can convert your "lawn" into a dirt patch rather fast!

    Cheers - SM

  20. Hello Aria, wonderful photos of this really interesting bird. At first sight I thought how big eyes it has but then I realised that is because of the blue around them.

  24. Nice photos, Arija! I can imagine it's amusing to watch these parrots. - I always made a long stop with parrots in the zoo. They are so smart. Thank for your comments on my blog. You are right about farmers losing their crops, but not only that, having to plow under perfectly healthy looking tomatoes etc because of contamination from the flood. And what a surprise to learn that you visited New England and even have a daughter here! Thanks for sharing!

  29. What unique little characters. They look like a child that got into their mothers make up. I always wonder at colouring such as this. They look as if they would be filled with all kinds of cheeky habits.
