Recently I had occasion to be in a shopping mall
you could not see the merchandise for all the decorations
enough twinkle lights to blind the unwary
wreaths the size of small barns
floating overhead
it all put me to flight
on Saturday I had to do some shopping at a supermarket
and was overwhelmed by columns of bears
almost twice my height
like rows and rows of soldiers bearing down on me . . .
needless to say, I fled in disorder
the spirit of Christmas was buried under
mountains of commercialism.
Whatever happened to Christmas with home made
personalised presents and a few chocolate sweets for the children?

ReplyDeleteTotally agree. I just won't go shopping for the next several weeks because of all the commercialism. Bring back the true meaning of Christmas.

ReplyDeleteIt has gone very commercial hasn't it Arija, though I did really enjoy your photographs, especially of the chocolate bears, being rather partial to bears in any shape or form. I remember the chocolate coins that were hung in mesh bags on our Christmas Tree, a very Charlie Brown tree compared to today's standards, but better than any I have ever had because it brings back some lovely memories of times with my family who are no longer with us, and being so excited to see a a favorite book which I would take to bed that night and read under the covers with a flashlight.

ReplyDeleteI suppose it should have been obvious that my 'four candle' bell chime would have a deeper history than simple amusement - but it never occurred to me to find out.
The whole family had a good sing at the school carols night last night - freezing (by Australian standards!) south wind - we sang to keep warm - other people just shivered! More fool them!

I love Christmas but all of the commercialism has reduced the shopping to just plain madness. Due to reasons beyond my control, I had to do all of my shopping online this year and everything has arrived, except one more thing. Hugs to you~

It's just as insane here, but I try to tune it out and stay out of the stores as much as possible this time of year. I love the holiday decorations, of course. And being with family. And sitting quietly while listening to Christmas music.
