After the dam was a dry dustbowl the summer before last
and only a puddle last year, at the start of this summer it was
almost a third full. We had nearly despaired of seeing our
resident pair of Australasian Grebes, Tachybaptus novaehollandiae.
Spring came this year but no Grebes but, miracle of miracles, they
are back and have one little grebelet to boot!
These shots are from before the big dry and taken across the
dam as the Grebes are very shy but aren't their flyffy backsides
cute?

Pretty shot of the ducks and water. Wonderful colors!
ReplyDeleteBirds can be resilient! I wonder where they went when the pond was too dry!
ReplyDeleteI love coming upon ducks.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad yours have returned.
We get a pair on the top of our pool cover every spring, and hurry to remove it before they get too cozy and set up family time. They head down to the lake, I suppose , and then return in the spring to visit again.
Aw, how cute they are, and I'm glad for you that they are back. Lets hope their lake doesn't dry up this year.
ReplyDeleteB.
Oh, I'm so glad they returned!
ReplyDeleteOh how darling! I can't wait till the ducks come back up here.
ReplyDeleteTheir backsides are cute and it looks like they have a bit of rouge on their cheeks as well.
ReplyDeleteThey look like grebes to me, do they dive?
ReplyDeletePenny, thank you so much for the identification! I should have turned the page in my birdfinder.
ReplyDeleteHow good that they returned. they must have liked the place.
ReplyDeleteIt is always wonderful when Nature returns as it should..I can see your heart is happy for this.

Such pretty reflections in the water, beautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scene!
ReplyDeleteAre you crazy of course you are coming and you are gypsy 19.
ReplyDeleteMy plan was to travel to Australia and to bring some cool mountain ice and we would take turns keeping the head wagon (yours) cool. Even I would get up off my butt to make sure you were cozy.
Oh hunter gatherer get well and we will be there by the morning.
xoxoxo
Hello mad crone I love the idea. Notice you never ever said mad but I did. And your seven skirts with all the pockets.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, have we arrived in Australia yet?
Oh and how I love how we are so into doing good deeds. har har
xoxoxo
Oh I love the skirts. And 7 well gypsies are obviously brilliant, I never even thought of one for each day.
ReplyDeleteArija I love you.
Saw my Mom last night and she is such a wonderful doll. But it is hard too because you can see that she gets worse.
I wanted to throw a gypsy throw on her and see if it was more magical than the Scottish tartan she was wearing but I knew that was not so.
xoxo
I think she will darling. She is surrounded by love, lots of it. But it is still hard.

If Monet had had Grebes in his pond, his painting would have looked like your photo!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your Grebes are back, with a little one to boot!
Beautiful colors and the reflection of the light in the water! The first photo looks like an oil painting.
ReplyDeleteHow are you dear Arija? Are you getting yourself well? I miss you. I hope you are taking good care of you!
ReplyDeleteYour grebes are beautiful! They look so peaceful! I just came from Ces's blog and read your comment - wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you and sending lots of love! Silke
