Starry, Starry Night

It is midnight
sleep refuses to come knocking at my door
the lights are out
my eyes are tightly shut
my prayers said
yet fickle sleep hides in the shadows

Defeated
I open my eyes
and lo
bright stars wink down at me
and beckon me
to come outside and play

The night is totally still
just a few frogs
still raise their voices
in the distant dam
and all around me
dance the stars

The sky so clear
thick strewn with stars
beyond stars beyond stars
like grains of sand
upon a beach
the more you look
the more you see

Some large engulfed in halos
some like tiny pinpricks
bravely glowing
in the depths of space
thick like feathers in a quilt
forever there
in deep infinity.

The Pilgrim

I walk the earth with gentle tread
my feet explore my dreaming
on paths of animals they roam
forever seeking a way home
to myriads of stars ascending
down to the deep of sea go wending
forever knowing, somewhere going
flowers from my full heart sowing
with meadowsweet and children growing
all seeing, joy and sorrow blending
seeking a start that's never ending.

All my photos may be enlarged.

Wanderlust at Twilight

We drove to the horizon
and nearly fell right off the earth

we drove by day and drove by night
we drove for all that we were worth

we drove for days on end,
until we nearly dropped

it seemed we drove for ever more
until one day we stopped

and stood there wondering
why ever we did start
when now we had left far behind
all things close to our heart.

The far horizon beckoned
with promise full of change
but everything we yearned for
was home, close to our range.

If ever we should get the urge
to harness horse and go
to run away from daily life
that's boring, drear and slow,
take out the axle pin
and say the waggon broke.

Brew up a billy full of tea
upon a smoking campfire
and say if we should need a change:
"go camp down on the flat,
the snakes are plentiful down there
they'll give you quite a thrill,
the kangaroos go sailing by
bushwhacking noises fill the night
the sheep can give you quite a fright

and we will know that you are safe
from hoons and trucks upon the road.

The stars shine brightly there at night
and should the cold decide to bite
come back and turn the blanky on
and sleep in your own bed,
the cat will read a goodnight tale
and you will get well fed".

Sleep

When sleep like stealthy thief
escapes into the night,
breathing the darkness deeply
like bird in restles flight
to roam beneath the stars
or moon, or absence of all light
chasing memories and hopes
in endless roundelay
the little worries of the coming day

Where does sleep hide
when she departs
why forsakes us in our need?
Oh fickle lady of the night
to come and shackle us by day
inopportunely shutting down
our senses in a busy town
with traffic roaring all around
and nowhere to be safely still
while she exerts her wayward will.

Counting my Blessings

Scroll down for Weekly Birds, My World,
Today's Flowers and SkyWatch.

Tonight I feel a little down
so just to lessen my gathering frown
I started thinking of things I treasure
that bring me hope and joy and pleasure.

I do like bacon
and I do like eggs
I like great horses
with four stout legs
Sun on a pond
and stars in the sky
a flock of parrots
passing by

A little daisy
in the grass
and shadows
in a looking glass

Tiny tots twittering
as they play
and teenagers
frittering time away

An old man
sitting on a bench
tar newly laid
the steam and the stench

The tide roaring in
with foaming fetlocks
a streamlet gurgling
over gleaming wet rocks

Cows chewing cud
in paddocks of green
and drifting sand
where no footstep has been

Glorious sunsets
and grey winter morns
shooting stars
and bright crisp dawns.

Thre is a lot more where that came from, if any
one is interested, I may post more.

Moonrise

*
*
The rising moon
my face caressing

has banished sleep

once more

*
Outside in still, crisp night

so clear

stars blaze above me

putting moon to shame

horizon kissed by Southern Cross

Nebula at mid heaven

like Merlin's coat

the firmament adorned

*
Though frost may burn

young growth this night

the bright exhilarating sky

shall stay a dear delight.
