and the first of the tiny, 6"high, Statice in the palest of blue
against the red desert soil.
There I was, about to be erudite and tell you all the botanical
names and the great big tome on native plants I just bought
turned out to be a dud!
This one I know without a book, Solanum petrophilum.
This is one I know all too well since it is a common weed on
our farm and is the flower in my header, Echium plantagenium.
The really exciting flowers will start next week.

Our trip to the drylands in a wet season was amazing in many
ways among the high points were the flowers.

ReplyDeleteArija, I must tell you that I am having the biggest, most enjoyable chuckle while reading your post for you see, over here on this continent we horti-nuts pay the highest prices you can imagine in order to have some of YOUR native blooms in our gardens. You say your header is the *weed* Echium plantagenium??? geesh. I know of a mail order nursery two states down from me that charges $5 American dollars for *one plant* of this spritely annual...well, I'd say you have about $5 million dollar's worth there in that photo!! HA! You are an Echi-millionairess!!
