SkyWatch Friday - The heavens helped me celebrate

Last week around this time it was my birthday,
as the cricket score would say 78 not out.
Contrary to doctors' expectations,
I have outlived their predictions
by eleven years and counting . . .

even the heavens seemed to celebrate

a late  afternoon rainbow
spanning the farmyard

what better birthday present is there?

Actually there was, DD* took me for a picnic morning tea
at Jenkins Scrub where the wild orchids were in bloom
and while we wandered there
suddenly, our of the bushes came my son and his
elder daughter who had flown over from Sydney
to surprise me.

I felt I was the luckiest of mortals to have
so many dear ones around me.

OUR WORLD & Nature Notes - The Joys of Home

My horizons have shrunk a little recently so it was not only a
great surprise but also a great joy when my eldest
granddaughter built a beautiful chicken coop for my birthday
last month

If you enlarge, you can see it in all it's glory gracing the corner
of my fallow veggie patch, front left, rain gauge on the stone seat

when my grandchildren provide, they provide thoroughly, three
bantam pullets and a bin of wheat as well + two eggs they had
laid in transit

within four days, they were tame enough so I could let them
mow the lawn and hunt for insect pests

up close and personal, when I step outside, they very soon find me

and together we enjoy the spring and the view down to my
daughter's house and the huge false acacia, apple trees in bloom
and the pink of Tamarix gallica just showing at bottom left.

The world is beautiful and I am well content.

TODAY'S FLOWERS - My Birthday Tree

My how time flies . . .

A month ago I was afraid my birthday tree
- this flowering cherry -
would forget to flower for the second time in 43 years
but, hey presto, the first flower did open on the day, while the
rest of the tree was still in tight bud.

During the next week, buds kept unfurling to the very
top of the tree

scented and pretty, it was covered in pink ruffles and furbelows

in cascades of of sheer beauty.

It has been a beautiful spring indeed.

And lastly, a birthday bouquet for my dear Prof. from another
year when there was a profusion of flowers in the garden to
choose from, although the lilieas were badly wind damaged
they were important for the fusion of scents.

Remembrance Day....

1918...my parent's wedding.

Today would have been my mother's one hundred
and eleventh birthday...
unlike the weddings of today, no designer dress or
multi-thousand $ reception. Just two very serious
young people, my mother, a university student, my
father just discharged army surgeon.

Life ahead .... uncertain.
Prospects ..... non-existent.

Medical positions were all filled ... they worked at
anything they could find. Father had perfect pitch
and tuned pianos for a while. They farmed but with
the arrival of children, ends refused to meet.

The depression of the thirties did not make things
easier. Father joined the police force reaching the rank
of inspector, mother worked as international telephonist
since she spoke 5 languages.

Their story of the years between the wars is worthy
of a book by itself. It was mother's fortitude that kept
her fledglings safe and together after the terror of 1940
when my father was deported to Siberia.

In 1944, her elder son already twice wounded and sent
back to the front, with the imminent threat of another
Russian invasion, she bundled up her brood and fled.

The story of flight, famine and 5 years of being displaced
persons, fills yet another book.

Starting again in Australia, a strange land, a strange
language and cusoms, even the seasons upside down
and not a penny to scratch with, at 51 years of age was
not exactly a picnic either ... yet she brought us all up
safely and helped each one of us to get a good start in
life. We owe her so much more than life itself. She was
a philosopher and poet who spent her working life in
Australia hunched over a sewing machine in an army
uniform factory just to put a roof over our heads and
send me to university.

Mother was truly a remarkable woman, see also her
granddaughter India's post.

Milestones

How quickly the last 6 months have flown
since I started blogging. I have to thank my
wonderful daughter for showing me the ropes
and pushing me in head first.

I have met lovely people on the way and made
a few dear friends in distant places. For that I
am most grateful.

Learning by example and a few excellent tips
on bird photograpy have made a great deal of
difference in my aptitude and attitude, and in
consequence I now catch an occasional bird in
good light and in focus.

I thank all you kind bloggers for your encouraging
comments which I treasure and relish .

What better way to celebrate my 100th. post than
by wishing my wonderful granddaughter endowed
with style and flair, who gladdened our hearts by
joining the Christmas festivities in top hat and tails!,
is endowed with talent, beloved of animals, and cooks
like a dream

THE HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY ANYONE
HAS EVER HAD!
May your wildest dreams come true!

On such an occasion, even this grandmother can
rise to baking a favourite summer strawberry flan.

Wishing everyone, everywhere a wonderful day!
Stay safe, stay warm or cool as required, and above all,
stay happy.

SkyWatch *7, Birthday Skywatch

At sunrise, a little bird in the oak tree

At lunch on the riverboat at Waikerie

on the Murray river a Welcome Swallow

sitting on a mooring rope

Back across the ferry with afternoon sun lighting

up the sandstone cliffs and bags of oranges
and avocalos as well as a lovely perfumed posy
to take home

Wheat field with rapidly rising clouds

ziz zaging across the heavens

Hubby and granddaughters showered me
with presents

Youngest granddaughter, all of 16, baked
this batch of cream puffs for me with rum
in the whipped cream

and to top off a perfect day, my 19 year old grandson
painted a bluebird for me with his spray kit to a
perfect, brand new duco finish!

I felt more loved and cherished than ever before.
I thank my family for the wonderful kindnesses
of this perfect day.
