The mighty Murray River brought to its knees by drought and
excessive plundering of its water for irrigation and water supplies
to townships hundreds of miles away.

A lonely seagull surveys the exposed sandbanks.

You can tell its normal width by the trees on its banks. Now
it is so shallow you can walk across where paddle-steamers
once plied their trade. The lakes further down its course have
dried up and its mouth to the sea has been silted over for
many a year.

This is just so sad Arija.
ReplyDeleteWow. Even though it's sad, it's important to show what happens when we demand too much from our natural world. You did a nice job photographing and, with few words, making a good point.
ReplyDeleteWe have droughts in CA as well, but I haven't seen such scene. Though the photos are amazing, still such unique beauty. Thanks for sharing and stopping by.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great set of photos to show what could happen to our planet. I wish that you get enough rain to refill the Murray River.
ReplyDeleteOh this is sad, Arija. But well done on making us all aware of what we do it we demand too much of the earth. Thanks for visiting my blog today. I'm happy to report that our cat is almost back to normal again. Bless you my friend. Jo
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, this is terrible, Arija. I know the drought conditions have been bad in Australia, but it seems that something else could be done for the far-off townships than draining the Murray River, like maybe collecting more rain water?
ReplyDeleteCiao Arija, queste tue foto sono così fresche :)
ReplyDelete.... un bagno ci vorrebbe proprio con tutto questo caldo che fà in Italia.
Ciao-ooooo :)
Great shots of the mighty Murray.
ReplyDeleteWhat a joy and relief for the sense of sight. Please have a good Wednesday.

ReplyDeleteWe do not seem to understand the effects of over development until it is too late. The Murray must have been quite a sight when full. Great post!

This is so sad to see how it is look like now. I haven't visited the Mighty Murray and I hope someday I can grab a chance. Great photos. You captured them wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteThe poor Murray. The world over we use water like there was an endless supply and the land and the creatures that depend on the water suffer.
ReplyDeleteVery worrisome indeed.
ReplyDeleteHope there are showers soon.
these are nice photos. the story behind this made me sad though :(
