SkyWatch ~ Darkening skies

One evening at Arno Bay on the Eyre Peninsula in South

Australia, the sky looked quite promising for an interesting

sunset . . . giving a whole new meaning to pole sitting . . .

Clouds were gathering and showing a nice touch of colour,

until just a few too many arrived and the light found it

difficult to break through

and a few minutes later it started to pour. I just managed

to tuck my camera safely under my jacket and arrived at

our lodging absolutely dripping.

World Bird & Watery Wednesday ~ Pelican Rising

Tumby Bay, South Australia, has a substantial pelican population

due to a great number of caravanning early retirees fishing from

the delightfully long jetty.

Woops, maybe not quite so perfect . . .

Sinking fast, if you do not bother to enlarge, at least enlarge this

one. Not a good look at all, this amphibian is taking on water!

Another bounce and almost there . . .

One more, and bombs away!!!, but only just . . .

Yep, take-oof and landing are the most dangerous manoeuvres

when flying. Pelicans always look so cumbersome on take-off.

Landing is not such a problem, they just waterski and if it isn't

perfect, they just ruffle their feathers as a cover up.

Watery & World Bird Wednesday - Wet

Today it rained, well actually it came down cats and dogs and

small elephants, in buckets and tub fulls, overflowing the gutters

along their entire length.

The front path was flooded,

along the back of the house it was awash.

It was so thick you could hardly pick out landmarks.

Water is always a blessing here and a tropical storm crossing

the entire continent for our benefit is a rare event.

This was the single greatest daily rainfall event since 1936!

The pelicans were definitely smiling, this one photographed

in Goolwa last week.
