MY WORLD ~ Farm Friends

Poor old Goosie, she lost her mate last year and hasn't laid an
egg since . . . at least she can still goose-step and she has struck
up a firm friendship with our last remaining chook (read chicken
if you are in N.America). Both of them have a topknot.

Kelpie enjoying the sunshine

and an orphan rescued by one of my softy granddaughters.
She brings anything lost or hurt home . . . the last thing we
needed was a Billy goat kid, cute though.

Although these are one of our national emblems and very pretty
to look at, they are now in ever increasing numbers and very
destructive to fences.

A couple of happy cows came to say hallo as I passed the paddock

and at the end of the Wild Wood, our black sheep had yet again
had black and white twins.

She was very protective of them and led then away as soon as she
heard me.

Nature Notes ~ The Wonders of Spring

The wonders of spring burst forth in ever greater measure,
I step outside my door and my senses are swayed by an
onslaught of scents. The orange tree in full bloom, a mass of
roses, philadelphus and scented orchids. The wisteria has just
finished as have the apple blossoms, yet in their place there are
drifts of white and pink hawthorns in the paddocks.

A tree peony bows her head to listen to the chatter of
forget-me-nots.

The shade house is bursting with sprays of orchids

and lilacs, although near the end of their season, still exude
their bitter-sweet perfume.

A few pelargoniums have recently found their way into my
garden and add an extra splash of colour.

Also these little purple daisies, Felicia augustifolia.

Another find and new addition so dear to my heart, a wildflower
in the country of my birth that grows on the wayside between
where my elder brother lived and where he now lies. Precious
memories awaken with the ringing of these beautiful blue bells.

Last but not least, springtime is the time for shearing the sheep
and tomorrow this little one will have trouble recognising its
own mother who will be slender as a willow wand when relieved
of her heavy fleece.

There is so much more I would lie to show you but one must
not bore on for ever.

MY WORLD ~ 38 A Country Idyll

Although it is still winter and not spring, flowers
bloom and lambs are arriving

sheep gaze out from behind the boles of the trees

and gracefully graze on the grass that is green

deigning to glance at me as I pass.

Across the road a change of scene, what goes up

soon comes down as well

the race for the meals on wheels gathers pace

a perfect time to check on the herd and newborn calf

while the dogs are marching homeward bound after
checking the boundaries all around.

All pictures like being enlarged, so do the animals!

Spring ~ in lighthearted vein

Spring is springing
the birds are singing

and bees are winging
from petal to bloom

The breeze is drifting
my spirits lifting
sunlight is shifting
dispelling all gloom

The tree tops swaying
the hens start laying
there is no gainsaying

the call to go forth

The meadows are calling
and cats caterwauling

lambs prancing and frolicking

in grass to their knees

Life now is beginning
the frosty nights thinning
the dance of the seasons

is stepping in tune.
