OUR WORLD - A Walk in the Woods

A gloomy, rainy afternoon

but oh such a wonderful walk 

in a rain drenched forest.

If you look closely, you can glimpse a kangaroo next to 

the second tree on the right.

Sorry, I could not help slipping this in with the Brownies

and their leader.

This stone obviously was not rolling, everything was so 

vibrantly green and wet . . .

Nature's basket weaving

moss on moss, I found this rather interesting,

a marriage of two different mosses.

What princess was this that was turned into a tree with

 her braided tresses trailing on the forest floor

rain: between shots the camera tucked inside my jacket

in every family, there is one with his head above the others

fascinating rocks, singly and in mounds

half the trees have been felled so there is much more light

in the forest and the forest floor is much greener than before.

My friend and companion contemplating the little green pool

that in summer is totally covered in duck weed.

Not the forests of oak, birch and fir of my childhood but a

place of trees none the less

and I always feel at home amongst trees.

An hour of walking and listening here, smelling the wet pine needles,

is bound to restore the soul and lift the spirits.

OUR WORLD - Now You See It, Now You Non't

I took these photos some time ago, when we were in 

the high country of Victoria.

On the way up to Mt.Buffalo, this pile of rock - no idea what 

the mountain was called - caught my eye.

On the way back from the climb to the summit, clouds were 

rolling in at a great rate.

They rolled in at such a rate that within a few minutes,

the whole pile vanished

only to reappear a moment later.

Ah, the vagaries of weather. 

If only life were like that and could restore 

which had been wiped out.

Nature Notes ~ A Walk on the Beach

This is Second Valley in South Australia, a tiny horseshoe bay

with a short but, at high tide, a deep mooring place. There is a

white sand beach with interesting rocks and rounded green hills

around. The fishing is good and the play of light on sea and shore

quite spectacular. On top of all, the water is crystal clear right

to the deep depth at the end of the jetty.

A perfect place to sketch with charcoal from an old camp fire

on the beach

or go exploring along the rocky outcrops as the tide is going out.

Wildflowers inhabit any crevice they find and

limpets and other much smaller tidal sea creatures cling to

the rocks. These tiny invertebrates are less than one tenth

of an inch and smaller (click to enlarge), I could barely recognise

them and I was wearing glasses.

Flat, rounded stones that your hands just itch to fondle and

take pocket-fulls home. I resisted, but just barely. These days

my collecting is done by camera.

The striations on the rocks and the vegetation are enchanting,

as are the bees and butterflies.

and the view is a pure dream.
