SkyWatch - Fog

Early morning, I wondered why the sun was still abed,

one look out the window and I levitated out of bed snatching

at my camera 

the paddocks softened by the scattered light

down the hill, the houses were fading away

but up the hill, the blanket of grey grew ever thicker

until it gobbled up the trees and shrubs and ground and 

indiscriminately hid the sheep and kangaroos . . .

as well of course, the sky.

A few more remembrances of our autumn colour pilgrimage to

the Victorian Alps, the caravan park at Jamieson with its magic

of autumn colour. Those of you in the Northern Hemisphere must

wonder at my excitement to be amongst all this splendid colour.

Just consider that nearly all Australian trees are evergreen,

momentarily I can only think of one that is deciduous. There

must be a few more but they do not spring readily to mind.

The combination of autumn colour and running water is just

irresistible to me so we drive a thousand miles one way to

immerse ourselves in this glorious colour-bath.

I am particularly enamoured of trees that are baring their souls

like this willow that has shed two thirds of it's golden glory.

An Amanita muscaria doing its utmost to lift our cabin off it's stumps.

A kookaburra doing his tree-hugging impression

and a tiny Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis, posing in the light .

I just could not stop walking around the caravan park and

adjoining public parks on either side of it along the river and

snapping away.

There was wall to wall colour wherever one looked,

a few Maple leaves enjoying the sunshine

while this female Common Blackbird, Turdus merula, preferred

the shade for her worm hunting forays and had a beak full of

rich, nourishing, wriggling goodness within minutes to feed

her growing brood.

Here is the male of the species checking me out. Blackbirds

are about the size of American Robins and have quite amazing

songs.

The gold of Liliodendron tulipifera against the russet leaves

of the oak

and last but not least, a king parrot female demolishing the

buds of Camellia sasanqua probably to it's owner's chagrin.

Shadow Shot Sunday ~ On a Country Walk

I could not wait until dusk for my morning constitutional,

so off i trundled after lunch, Up the road that splits our farm

to the top of the hill and through the magic living gate that

almost marks the end or the beginning of our place.

As I passed the shadows a friendly ant of the Myrmacia family

crossed my path

to disappear into the depths of the shadows cast by our sentinels.

SkyWatch & Nature Notes ~ Fog

Fog, like a creeping thief

came silently at night

stealing away the hills

and houses that we knew

trees close at hand

loom up like ghosts,

the jewelled pond at sunset

is tucked within the bag upon his back

and is no more.

Only the nearest garden fence

has some existence,

all else has gone into

a whiteness dense as rock,

no sky, no landmark

and no sound or call

an eerie stillness

blankets over all

and still he creeps . . .

dim headlights loom

and tremble as they

inch upon their way

where all that yesterday

was bright and gay

on waking ,

has been spirited away.

Shadow Shot Sunday ~ This and That

The fence and I . . .

What shadows lurk to hide the bold

or trees on water tanks enfold?

To any and all who have as yet not heard me wish you a

Happy New Year, I do so now: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

This is one day of the week when we shoot at shadows, so,

Shadow Shot Sunday ~ Town and Country

Last week we bought about half a ton of tiles and guess who

had a flat tyre as soon as they were loaded up???

While the Prof pumped it up so we could get to the next garage,

your's truly was checking out others for our verandah . Had to be

traditional since our house was built in the 1850's. After the 1983

bushfires only the walls still stood but they were the oldest walls

on Mt.Lofty so the tiles need to have the same look.

For a contrast and because I'd rather live in a forest than a

house, here are some shadows from our wild wood on the

farm.

SkyWatch ~ 46 ~ Winter Skies

The world is changing yet again, these wondrous
naked trees showing the essence of their being are
thinking now of Spring.

These are the last of the winter skies, soon, too soon
clouds will be in short supply, the sun already burns
and the warm north wind dries out the soil.



Another month and this will be the scene, hope in
the sky but always passing by.



One more sunrise to add some colour to our lives.

Watery Wednesday ~ 13 Spring on the Murray River

just greening up
